Broaching is a precision machining process used to remove material from components. A toothed tool – called a broach – is passed along or through a blank object in one consistent motion. Depending on the broach used, the process can create a circular hole, an irregular exterior shape, a keyway or a geometric shape, among many others.
A spline is formed when keyways are aligned around a hole. Splines can have any number of teeth, and the teeth can be shaped straight-sided, involute, or helical.
